BIO
One of the most important guitarists in contemporary music, composer and artistic director of SMASH ensemble. After twenty years of professional career in music, he decides to extend/pollute his artistic/musical activity in the plastic arts, film and multimedia; his most recent work is based in creating musical hybrid objects, compose and “make” (poiesis/praxis) an extended interpretation of his musical repertoire.

 
Bertrand Chavarría-Aldrete (Mexican born in Lyon, France) studied in Mexico (Gregorio Rangel, Édgar Cortés, Andrés Liceaga, Pedro Salcedo, Martín Madrigal), France (Raymond Gratien, Judicaël Perroy, Thanh Nguyen), The Netherlands (Zoran Dukic) and Portugal (Faculdade de Belas Artes, Porto).

 
Music, being an essential aspect in his family, makes him immediately interested in newly written music; focusing in composition, analysis and the interpretation of works from the twentieth and twenty-first century, up to this date has premiered more than fifty works and worked with numerous composers for the creation of a new repertoire for guitar.

 
Due to a very wide repertoire, from renaissance up to the music written nowadays, has been invited to Time of Music (Finland), ContemPuls (Czech Republic), Ars Musica (Belgium), IRCAM, Fondation Royaumont, Cité de la Musique, Festival d’Automne à Paris (France), Festival Internacional de Guitarra de México, Festival Visiones Sonoras, Festival Internacional de Guitarra de Monterrey (Mexico), Inter Arts Center (Sweden), Stekávání Nové Hudby Plus – Brno (Czech Republic), Gaida Festival (Lithuania), Frankfurter Gesellschaft für Neue Musik (Germany), Susa Festival (Denmark), Inter Arts Center (Sweden), Sound 59 Festival (Russia), Quincena Musical Donostiarra, Festival Nous Sons – L’Auditori, Contemporary Music Series BBVA Foundation, Festival ENSEMS, Concert series CNDM – Museo Reina Sofia or Festival de Música de Alicante (Spain); made recordings for Radio France, Radio Nacional de España, as well as for the labels Sismal Records, LH Production, 3D Classics and Odradek Records, and collaborated with ensembles like Ensemble Linea, Ensemble Intercontemporain or Ensemble Arcema.

 
In 2006 he co-founded, and since, been the director the SMASH Association in Spain (SMASH ensemble and Festival Internacional SMASH de Música Contemporánea), which aims to promote an create contemporary music.

 
Current projects are Proyecto Mudarra, which consists in arranging for guitar, performing and recording the Tres libros de vihuela of Renaissance spanish composer Alonso Mudarra, and Novum Organum a compilation and guitar method for the XXI century, as well as the creation of a recording catalogue of spanish contemporary music from the XXth and XXIst century with Odradek Records under the name carpere fide(s).

 
On the pedagogical field, his actions mainly focus on activities for children that involve music and plastic arts, also interviews to composers and artists, as well as lectures, masterclasses and articles.

 
His creative part as an artist extends through different channels; extensions/consequences that emerge in a wider artistic expression. His composition work is based on creating works with different visual and sound supports that can only be entirely perceived in situ (Cahier M, La nef des fous). As a filmmaker has created two documentaries (75 Centavos, Diario Portuense) and videos (Folias de España, Fuga (soiseubuda)). In the plastic art/multimedia, his current work concentrates on a collection of sound structures (pulsações dilatadas), that are an interpretation/plastic-visual extension of the works he performs as an interpreter; some of his recent works have already been exposed in Spain and Portugal.

 
After seventeen years in Europe, in 2016 receives the double nationality (Mexican-Spanish); he currently lives in Europe.
